From Ghetto to Medicine
This is the sequel to A Stranger in the Barrio. It
will be published later this year. It’s the autobiography of
a ghetto boy’s plunge into medicine in the big city of Miami,
in the largest teaching hospital in Florida. Among indigent
patients, mostly blacks, Franchito learns the art of medicine.
He tells of how medicine was practiced in the early ’60s in
a segregated South. He falls in love with a Chinese-American
classmate and crosses the color barrier when he marries her.
He soars to the top of his class, but his life outside the ghetto
is out of sync with the rest of America.
